Day #2 - Kennewick, Washington to Coos Bay, Oregon

We are in Coos Bay tonight after a beautiful day of driving.

We started the day with a delicious and healthy bowl of Cap'n Crunch's Sprinkled Donut Crunch - the breakfast of champion hikers everywhere!!  That put us all in a good mood that lasted the whole day!

The Breakfast of Champions!!

Once we crossed into Oregon we followed the Columbia River gorge for a couple of hours. It was unbelievable - like a smaller Grand Canyon.  The Columbia River is probably the biggest river we've ever seen.  Google told us it is 2000 km long, has 60 hydroelectric dams on it, and is the forth largest river in the USA.

We pulled over for a break as we were approaching the end of the gorge.  Amanda befriended a couple from Calgary (of course she did!) who were headed to Salem on motorbikes for a big bike rally.  Ron and Judy were super friendly, and Ron in particular was very hilarious.  Pretty much everything we talked about he summed by saying "It's bullshit!".  Their license plate on their three-wheeler was FROGHOG because he is a Frenchman and he used to ride a Harley.  It was a nice break, and lots of fun to chat with some fellow Albertans.

Almost There!

A couple of hours before we got to Portland the scenery changed from desert to lush coastal forest.  It is truly amazing how thick and dense the forest is.  The evergreen trees are massive.  As we approached Coos Bay the road got very curvy.  Amanda was driving at this point, and it was so relaxing to be a passenger.  I really enjoyed it.

We got some last minute groceries tonight and spent the last couple of hours getting the packs ready.  The plan is to get to the trailhead in Bandon at 6:00 tomorrow because we are trying to race the tide so we can safely cross New River.  We are watching a little TV right now before bed.

Not sure when we will get service next, but we will be back to civilization Wednesday night and will update then.

Thanks for reading, and good night from Coos Bay, Oregon.
